ACTIVITIES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Meetings on Thursdays

Due to online schools, we are unfortunately not allowed to meet in person. But this bump in the road did not stop us! We now hold weekly club meetings via zoom to explore the multitude of virtual engineering activities the world wide web has to offer. Come join us on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30! Direct Message us on Instagram for the meeting link.

In our upcoming meetings, we are planning on exploring: Coding Challenges, Team Building Activities, and At-Home Engineering and "Go-Green" Challenges

Boeing Business Case Competition

In December 2019, four sophomores from our club decided to undertake the challenge of the Boeing Business Case Competition. They competed against several other teams, including another team from Wheaton, to create a proposal in the form of an executive summary and a presentation to respond to the following prompt: What are the factors you would consider and approaches you would recommend to appropriately address the challenges involving various stakeholders?

Although these ladies had no prior experience in business competitions, they dedicated months to researching Boeing, constructing their argument, writing and refining their paper, and preparing a solid presentation. All of their effort payed off when they achieved first place in the Boeing Competition. Although Boeing has suspended their competition due to coronavirus, these ladies are exploring other competitions to embark upon and eagerly await the return of the Boeing Competition.

The Engineers Club

In February 2020, the Baltimore Engineers Club invited SWE to attend their outreach event for National Engineers Week. We toured their building, and then sat in for presentations by many inspiring female engineers on topics from environmental engineering to transportation engineering and architecture. After that we participated in their engineering challenge in which we created marble pathways using foam insulation pipes. It was truly a gift to meet with other aspiring engineers from across the county, and talk with women who worked their way up to become successful engineers.

NRC Visit

In March 2020, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission invited SWE to tour their office in Rockville. We not only learned about their developments in nuclear energy and plans for optimizing energy in the future, but we also had the privilege of eating with Commissioner Caputo and listening to Dr. Rita Baranwal speak about her experiences. What a wonderful way to celebrate International Women's History Month!
